Boating season may be winding down, but a little care now will make getting back on the water next spring much easier.
Cold weather, moisture and ageing fuel can all affect your outboard while it is stored. Winterising your Mercury helps protect the engine, support reliable performance and reduce the chance of an unwelcome repair bill.
Work through this simple checklist and ask your local authorised Mercury Marine dealer for help with anything you are unsure about.
Your Winterisation Checklist
Protect your fuel system
Old fuel can build up deposits and affect engine performance. Follow your owner’s manual for the correct fuel stabiliser and storage procedure for your engine.
Change the engine oil and filter
For applicable four-stroke engines, changing the oil and filter as part of scheduled maintenance helps protect internal components during storage.
Check the gear lubricant
Inspect and replace the gearcase lubricant as recommended. If the lubricant looks milky, it could indicate water contamination and should be checked by a qualified technician.
Inspect the propeller
Remove the propeller, where appropriate, to check for fishing line, damage or signs of wear around the propeller shaft. Have any issues addressed before the next season.
Check anodes and lubrication points
Inspect sacrificial anodes for wear and check the engine’s lubrication points in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. These help protect against corrosion and wear.
Clean and protect your engine
Flush the cooling system as directed in your owner’s manual, particularly after use in saltwater. Clean the exterior and apply a suitable marine corrosion protectant where recommended.
Prepare your battery and storage area
Follow the battery manufacturer’s guidance for winter storage, keep electrical connections in good condition and make sure your boat is stored securely and appropriately for the conditions.
Book your winter service
A professional winterisation service gives your engine expert attention before the colder months set in. Your dealer can identify potential issues, carry out scheduled maintenance and help ensure your engine is ready for the season ahead.
Leave Winterisation to the Experts
Not sure where to start? Winterisation requirements vary by engine model, so always follow your Mercury owner’s manual. Some procedures, including engine fogging and fluid changes, are best left to a trained technician.
