Tuck Your Boat in for Winter: Fuel & Storage Tips for Mercury Owners

Published October 30, 2026

As the days get shorter and colder, your boat may be ready for a well-earned winter break. Before you pack everything away, a few straightforward checks can help keep your Mercury outboard in good shape until spring.

A little preparation now can save time, money and hassle next season. Here is how to look after your fuel and choose a suitable place to store your boat—and when to call your local dealer for support.

Don’t Let Old Fuel Spoil the Fun

Fuel doesn't stay fresh forever. Left untreated over the winter, it can deteriorate and cause deposits to build up in your engine’s fuel system, potentially leading to starting and performance problems.

Here’s how to help avoid that:

Start with fresh fuel

Follow your engine’s guidance on preparing fuel for storage.

Add the right protection

Use a marine fuel stabiliser, such as Mercury Quickstor®, following the product instructions.

Treat the whole system

Follow your owner’s manual for circulating treated fuel through the engine before storage.

Check your fuel filter

Winterisation is a good opportunity to replace it if required.

Owner's Manual Note: Fuel tank requirements vary between boats and fuel systems, so always check your owner’s manual before deciding how much fuel to leave in the tank.

Give Your Boat a Safe Place to Hibernate

Fuel is only part of the picture. Where and how you store your boat can make a real difference, too.

Keep it covered and dry

Choose a suitable storage location and use a well-fitted, ventilated cover to help keep rain and moisture out.

Protect against freezing

Follow your engine and boat manufacturer's guidance for draining water from systems that could be damaged by freezing temperatures.

Avoid makeshift fixes

Wrapping your engine's gearcase in a plastic bag can trap condensation, increasing the risk of water-related damage. And never rely on an improvised heat source, such as a lightbulb, to protect your boat from frost.

Check before you walk away

Secure your boat, inspect the cover and make sure equipment is stored appropriately for the winter months.
