Yanmar’s industrial diesel engines receive certification for EU Stage V emission standards
Published on: 05/11/2018
Yanmar has released its first Stage V-ready engines, having received certification for complying with the European off-road emission legislation that comes into effect during 2019 and 2020.
The 24 diesel models cover not only the more stringent NOx and particulate matter standards imposed on the 19kW and over range, but also the more recently imposed regulations for engines introduced for the under 19kW range.
There are 3 Yanmar air-cooled diesel engine models available for the under 19kW units; the L48V, L70V and L100V. The other 21 Yanmar models are vertical, cylinder-type, water-cooled versions available across the power ranges, including the 4TNV94FHT unit for the 56kW and over market.
For models with an output of 19kW or more, the permitted values for NOx and PM emissions are one level stricter than current standards. New PN standards have also been set, making the new European emissions generally the most stringent in the world.
Yanmar’s range of diesel engines sold in Europe is suitable for a variety of industrial and agricultural equipment.
European Stage V Off-Road Emission Standards (EU Stage V)
- The new European emissions standards, commonly referred to as ‘EU Stage V’, will apply to engines installed in off-road mobile equipment, as stipulated according to engine output. The standards come into effect from 2019 through to 2020. These EU Stage V standards will also apply to diesel engines with an output range of less than 19kW which were previously not covered by the existing standards.
- Models with an output of 19kW and more, the permitted values for NOx and PM emissions are on a level stricter than current standards. In addition, new PN standards have been set making the new emissions standards generally the most stringent in the world.
- Some diesel engine models being used in the European market now require engine management systems to limit operation in the event of a malfunction in emission control systems or if the engine has been illegally modified.

*1 NOx: Nitrogen oxides such as Nitrogen Oxide (NO) and Nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
*2 PM: Particulate Matter. Airborne particles such as soot.
PN: Particulate Number. A standard that regulates the number of particulates contained within a mass unit of emissions; separate from the existing PM standards that regulate the mass of particulate matter contained within a mass unit of emissions.
