Til The Coast is Clear (TTCIC) is a Social Enterprise set up specifically to help rid the UK coastlines of marine pollution in areas that are difficult to reach.

As there is often limited access to the coast overland, TTCIC has acquired a recyclable Whaly 500R workboat to operate in areas otherwise rarely visited such as coves, cliffs, and estuaries. Here, the build-up of plastic is significant and currently out of sight, out of mind.

To assist the operation, Barrus has donated a Mariner 60hp four-stroke outboard engine. The increased fuel economy of the EFI engine and consistent, easy starting offers low running costs without compromising the environment.

Encouragingly, research shows that members of the public already gather plastic in specific places whilst kayaking, paddle boarding and walking. TTCIC works closely with Coastal Recycling to ensure that what is collected is upcycled recycled or incinerated to produce electricity and encourages the public to contact the team to arrange disposal.

In addition to day-to-day operations, TTCIC strongly supports the ongoing efforts of existing charities and organisations by assisting with mass beach cleans and encouraging behavioural change amongst consumers and manufacturers with the aim of maximising the scale and scope of their efforts.

The enterprise is part of an education programme and the team visit schools and organisations with the boat and kit to demonstrate that everyone can make a difference. Numerous Duke of Edinburgh award participants and students seeking exciting work placements have also created opportunities to connect with key generations that lead the drive for change.

“Like so many other keen outdoors enthusiasts I’ve been picking up litter for years whilst I’m out running, paddle boarding and sea kayaking,” commented Gary Jolliffe, Founder of TTCIC. “I noticed it getting much worse about two years ago, so I decided to try and do something on a more effective scale by working with businesses.”
