Barrus showcases the Mercury OptiMax Diesel Outboard Engine
Published on: 10/06/2015
The Mercury 180hp OptiMax Diesel outboard has been developed for military users for applications where petrol is either not available or carries a fire risk.
The 3-litre, 60° Vee, 2-stroke V6, diesel burning outboard engine has the benefits of being a cost effective and weight-saving alternative to a marine inboard diesel engine. This diesel engine can also easily replace current 2 and 4-stroke outboards of a similar size and weight due to their identical mounting points.
This exclusive spark ignited diesel uses a small charge of compressed air to finely atomise the diesel fuel as it injects it into the combustion. Atomising the fuel into a fine mist allows for ignition via spark to occur while delivering enhanced high-rpm running performance. A glow plug works alongside the spark plug to ensure consistent, reliable cold starting.
An on board Propulsion Control Module (PCM) optimises fuel and spark timing for improved running and performance throughout the engines operating range. SmartCraft®
Engine Guardian provides real-time, self-protection engine fault diagnostics and messaging.
The US military has already undertaken tests, and Barrus will continue testing with the UK MoD.
There is also a kerosene version available as an alternative.
