Military application

The Industrial Division offers a range of diesel engines from some of the world’s leading manufacturers including Yanmar and John Deere. Gaining many years of military experience, skills and knowledge through the involvement with numerous projects and applications, the Division has become familiar with the MODs exacting requirements.

The Yanmar and John Deere diesel engine ranges are now the choice of many key military equipment manufacturers where the demands for high quality, performance and reliability in operation are expected. These engines are custom-built in accordance with typical military specifications providing features such as low temperature starting, the capability of operating in extreme climatic conditions and running on multi-fuel options. Recent applications include:

Factair Ltd – VO4DM MKII Diesel Air Compressor

Factair has chosen Yanmar engines for the Factair VO4DM MKII Diesel Air Compressor. This diesel-driven, rotary-vane compressor set, mounted on anti-vibration mounts within a standard tubular frame is designed to deliver a convenient source of compressed air for a wide variety of applications. Powered by a Yanmar L100V6CA air-cooled diesel engine, rated 7.2kW (9.9hp) @ 3600rpm, the VO4DM has been supplied by Factair to a number of their military customers for field support applications. “We selected this engine as it has a number of key features which were important for our design specifications including the availability of a 24V starter; cold temperature glow plug heating system and 15A charging coil. In addition, with its proven reliability we were confident that the Yanmar L100 was the best option for our compressor package,” comments James Coleman, Managing Director, Factair Ltd.

Harrington Generators – ASTOR Airborne Stand-Off Radar

Barrus has supplied Yanmar and John Deere engines to Harrington Generators for a number of their military projects. Airborne Stand-Off Radar (ASTOR) is a ground surveillance system designed to provide information about the deployment and movement of enemy forces. Harrington’s provide the generators that power the ground station network, and each of these units has a John Deere 3029D engine, running at 1500rpm, close coupled to a Newage AVR controlled alternator. The generator is capable of running on both F34 Diesel and F54 AVTUR and has an outboard fuel tank with enough capacity to give 12 hours running at full load. The sets are mounted in an extremely rugged, acoustic canopy that in turn is mounted on a specially adapted version of an in-service trailer.

Vikoma International Ltd – Re-fuelling Pump Power Packs

Barrus has a long association with Vikoma, initially supplying Yanmar L-Series and TNV-Series engines for their oil spill response equipment. Vikoma bid and won a military contract and together with Barrus’ military experience, skills and knowledge the two companies worked closely to comply with the MODs exacting specifications and requirements. The Yanmar 4TNV98, 4TNV98T and 3TNV76 were all selected for re-fuelling pump power packs used for aircraft and road vehicles and have been supplied to KBR for a substantial MOD contract.

Rolls-Royce – 15kW Military Tactical Power Unit (TPU15)

In previous years, Barrus has also worked with Rolls-Royce supplying Yanmar engines for their lightweight battlefield generating sets, the 15kW Military Tactical Power Unit (TPU15). Powered by the Yanmar 3TNV88, the TPU15 utilises the latest variable speed permanent magnet alternator technology that provides excellent fuel efficiency and high quality, clean power. The 15kW unit is capable of operating to a military rating from -32OC to 55OC, both single and three phase, and is ideal for integration into vehicles, containers, trailers and shelters. Yanmar engines were chosen for their high profile reputation, reliability in operation, longevity and a worldwide service support network.

A core competency of the Industrial Division is its flexible approach to customer’s needs, providing specialist engineering support for both one-off projects and volume production. Application testing, including electrical and temperature tests,  is a vital part of the service provided by the Industrial Division as there are a number of factors that can influence an engine’s performance. Tests are carried out with the end user and the application in mind, particularly for military projects where engines are required to withstand the extremes of the hostile conditions they often have to operate in.

There will be examples of both John Deere and Yanmar air-cooled and water-cooled engines used in the above projects on the stand.
